The Translation

From the CHL Draft to the NHL Draft.

Every pick a CHL team makes is a bet on the future. This traces every one of those bets to its first verdict — the NHL Draft — for all three leagues, all 20 rounds, since 2000: who got picked, how high, how long the wait, what the career became. The first round is the proof point; the later rounds are where the surprises live. Official headshots, team logos and real stats throughout.

Real outcomes, 2000–2024 · NHL-draft rates settle for CHL classes ≤ 2022; career rates need mature classes ≤ 2017.

Quick answers

Start with the questions hockey readers actually ask: what happened to one CHL class, what did one NHL Draft pull from the CHL, and which timeline is being counted.

What they became

Getting drafted isn't a career. Of mature CHL first rounds (classes ≤2017), how many cleared each bar — NHL-drafted → played a game → 100+ GP NHLer → 400+ GP star.

How far down does it translate?

The first round is a different planet. NHL-draft rate (settled classes ≤2022) and NHL-play rate (mature ≤2017) for every CHL round — bars scaled to round one. The curve falls off a cliff after the first round, then flattens into a long, thin tail.

Does pedigree translate?

Every NHL-drafted CHL first-rounder: where they went in their league draft (across) vs where they went in the NHL Draft (down). If pedigree carried, dots would hug the top-left.

The wait — draft lag (D+N)

CHL years to the NHL Draft. CHL first-rounders are 15–16; most are NHL-drafted two years later, at 17–18.

Forwards, defence & goalies

Across the CHL first round — all three leagues (OHL · WHL · QMJHL), 2000–2024 — who gets NHL-drafted, who actually plays, the median wait and the scoring expectation. Draft rate counts settled classes ≤2022; play rate & points use mature classes ≤2017.

How every number is verified

Every public number runs on the same matched, de-duplicated set, cross-checked against the official NHL draft board — career leaderboards collapse to unique NHL players, and where the source attached the wrong career record to a real draftee (a mismatched birthdate), the player is re-resolved to the actual pick at that draft slot and given the right career — not dropped.

Sources, matching & honest caveats

Match confidence is surfaced on every drafted player: exact-name draft match birthdate-verified alias verified name variant fallback (flagged, lower confidence)
